Health and Travel Alert – U.S. Embassy Belgrade, Serbia (April 1, 2020)

Location:  Serbia

Event:  As of March 31, the Serbian Ministry of Health announced 900 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Serbia.

Ambassador Godfrey will host a Virtual Town Hall for U.S. citizens on Facebook tomorrow, Thursday April 2 at 3:00 p.m.to discuss the current situation on the outbreak of COVID-19 in Serbia and to provide an update on efforts to assist U.S. citizens and Legal Permanent Residents.  The Virtual Town Hall will be available for viewing after it ends as well.

The U.S. Embassy in Serbia is considering all options for assisting U.S. citizens in Serbia.  We do not know whether there will be another evacuation flight.  If there is another flight, it may be your last chance to return to the United States until commercial flights start operating again.  If we learn of a flight, it will likely be at very short notice.  We encourage all U.S. citizens or Legal Permanent Residents to register their interest in a possible evacuation flight by filling out this form now.  We must have a separate form for each member of your family/group.  Currently, we do not have any information about a flight.

U.S. citizens are encouraged to enroll in our Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive Alerts, and check our Embassy COVID-19 webpage for updated information as it is released.

The government of Serbia has implemented measures to limit the spread of COVID-19.  All airports and borders remain closed, except for cargo.  A curfew is in place nationwide from 5:00 p.m. through 5:00 a.m. on weekdays and 3:00 p.m. through 5:00 a.m. on weekends.  Permission to walk dogs for 20 minutes between 8:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. has been rescinded.  All people who entered the country on March 14 or later shall self-quarantine for 28 days.  All public transportation remains suspended. Taxis and private vehicles are still permitted.  All restaurants, cafes, and shopping malls are closed, though take-out and delivery are still permitted.  Supermarkets and pharmacies remain open, though with reduced hours to accommodate the curfew.  Green markets are now closed.  Recreational parks and sports facilities are closed.  No more than five people are allowed to assemble in a closed space.  People age 65 and older (70 and older in rural areas) are prohibited from leaving their homes.  Travelers should be prepared for further restrictions to be put into effect with little or no advance notice. Visit the website of the Government of Serbia for additional information on these new measures.

Effective March 16, U.S. Embassy Belgrade has suspended routine consular services.  Emergency American Citizens Services including emergency passport issuance continue to be available.  Please visit our website for additional information.

The Department of State has issued a Global Level 4 Health Advisory for COVID-19.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued a Level 3 Warning for COVID-19 advising travelers to avoid non-essential travel.
