Independence Day Reception

July 5, 2016

Mr. President, Madam Speaker, Mr. Prime Minister, Your Holiness, Ministers, Members of Parliament, Diplomatic colleagues, ladies and gentlemen, I wish you a Happy 4th of July!

I wish to thank Touch ‘n Go, Steve Rider, children’s chorus Čarolija, as well as all of our sponsors, embassy employees and volunteers for their help in making this such a special event.

Yesterday marked the 240th anniversary of the day the founders of America declared a new nation dedicated to a universal claim to human dignity, political participation and economic prosperity. Their Declaration of Independence was a statement of aspiration. Today, I am reminded that all great aspirations require commitment. We needed seven years of struggle to win our freedom. Indeed, 11 years later, when writing our Constitution, our forefathers reminded Americans that our political system was to form “a more perfect union.”

We are still working to achieve that goal, at home and in partnership with people and governments around the world.

Americans mark July 4th with celebrations that bring us together, as tonight’s celebration has with our Serbian friends. Together, we all share the same goals enshrined in the Declaration of Independence signed 240 years ago. I wish you all, “Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.”

I wish you all: “life, liberty and pursue for happiness”.
