Additional Information for Consular Reports of Birth Abroad

Information For Applicants

If you are a U.S. citizen and the parent of a child born outside of the United States, you will need to document your child’s U.S. citizenship with a Consular Report of Birth Abroad (CRBA).

At least one parent and the child must be present at the Embassy to submit the application. The following documents must be presented at the time of the CRBA application:

Checklist for eCRBA

The eCRBA application will guide you through the process and will help you understand which documents to provide, as well as what type of documents are acceptable.  You must provide supporting documents to show:

  • A record of the child’s birth (original and certified translation into English)
  • Proof of the U.S. nationality for transmitting parent(s) (typically, an original U.S. passport, birth certificate, or naturalization certificate)
  • Both parents’ (for the U.S. citizen parent(s) and non-U.S. citizen parent, if relevant) identification documents
  • Evidence of the parents’ marriages (original marriage certificate and certified translation into English)
  • Proof of the termination of all marriages by death or divorce (copy or original and certified translation into English)
  • Evidence of a legal custodial relationship and financial support (only in certain cases)
  • Proof of residence and physical presence in the United States, its outlying territories, or qualifying U.S. government service overseas prior to the child’s birth. For examples of acceptable proof of physical presence, please click here.
  • If the U.S. citizen parent cannot attend the appointment, they must complete theAffidavit of Parentage, Physical Presence and Support.

You can scan, save, and upload documents in each section of the eCRBA application.  You must bring the originals to the in-person interview where a consular officer will verify all original documents.

Checklist for paper CRBA

If you cannot use the new eCRBA system, please follow the instructions below to prepare your documents and make an appointment for your child’s CRBA:

  • Completed but UNSIGNED CRBA application Form DS-2029 – all questions must be answered.  Please, do NOT sign this form.
  • Record of child’s birth (Usually, a birth certificate.  Please include the original and certified translation into English)
  • Proof of U.S. nationality for the transmitting parents(s) (typically, an original U.S. passport, birth certificate, or naturalization certificate)
  • Both parents’ (for the U.S. citizen parent(s) and non-U.S. citizen parent, if relevant) identification documents
  • Evidence of parents’ marriages (original marriage certificate and certified translation into English)
  • Proof of the termination of marriages by death or divorce (copy or original and certified translation into English)
  • Evidence of a legal custodial relationship and financial support (only in certain cases)
