Sinergija 2018 – Opening remarks

For many of the Serbs in the audience, I hope you have had a chance to see the video clip the U.S. Embassy in Belgrade prepared to honor 100th anniversary of the Serbian flag flying over the White House.

For those who may have missed it, that video includes a sincere message to Serbia: “Vi Ste Svet,” “You are the world.”  It is a tip of the hat to Serbia as a land of great athletes, artists, writers and scientific pioneers.  And now, in the 21st century, Serbia is also becoming a global player in the digital world.

So it is a special pleasure for me to repeat that message right here, at the Microsoft’s Sinergija.  Vi ste svet.

For 18 years in a row, Microsoft has used this conference to bring together and connect technology, innovation, and business to help all of you achieve a better position for Serbia on the economic and scientific map of the world.

Today, more than ever, technologies are erasing boundaries that exist on world maps.  It has never been easier for people to connect and communicate than in this digital era.  Digital products, solutions and services come to the global market with breathtaking speed.

And, of course, it’s not just the technology, the software and hardware that’s so important.  It’s the brains.  It’s all of you.  You are the ones who will make contributions on the global scale.  Vi ste svet.

In my time in Serbia, it has become clear that somehow, people from this region have a knack for technology and innovation.  We see a flourishing of such examples, in Microsoft’s Development Center, NCR’s global centers for remote support, and various projects in the field of education.

With the help of the new technologies, Serbians are already adopting new standards in education and in the workplace that erase boundaries between nations and between people. That is why this is the right moment for a digital breakthrough, and I won’t be surprised if there is a Serb or team of Serbs leading the charge.

Some dreams from Serbia have already changed the whole world.  Others in the future I am sure will do the same.

Thank you, and good luck.
