Statement on Ratko Mladic’s Mural
The United States and Serbia share a commitment to core values, including tolerance, human rights, and rule of law. It can be challenging to reconcile difficult moments from the past – both in the United States and in Serbia – but there is no honor in protecting a memorial to a war criminal convicted of genocide and crimes against humanity. We hope that Serbia will focus on a brighter, more inclusive future, rather than perpetuate the pain, darkness, and division of the 1990s. Ratko Mladic should not be the face of Belgrade to the world.
