Important Information about Visa Appointments

Urgent Travel

If you have an urgent matter for which you need to travel immediately, please follow the guidance provided at our Online Scheduling Service to request an expedited appointment. Requests for expedited appointments will only be considered if they are submitted through the Appointment Service Website.

Pre-screening for All E, L, O and P Visa Applications

Please note that the Visa Unit, Consular Belgrade requires pre-screening for visa types E, L, O and P.

Applicants for these visa categories will be directed by our scheduling service how to send all application materials to the Consular Section for document review.  (You do not need to send your passport at that time, but a copy of your most recent passport is extremely helpful.)

  • In some cases, applicants will be eligible for the Interview Waiver Program (IWP) under which some visas can be processed without an interview. Please do not assume that if you were eligible for the IWP in the past, you will not have to come to the Consular Section for this interview. Applicants who qualify for the IWP will receive notification when their passports and visas are available for pick-up at the selected DHL location in Serbia.
  • If applicants are not eligible for the IWP, an interview will be scheduled by the Consular Section after all prescreening has finished. This can take time, so please do not make any travel plans or leave the United States in anticipation of a quick appointment. Our scheduling service will provide applicants with an appointment, and if they require a later appointment, they need to contact Consular Department via email at consbelgrade@state.gov for rescheduling.

Please note:

  • If any additional documents are needed, applicants will be informed whether to bring them to the scheduled interview, send them via DHL, or email them to the Consular Section.
  • Kindly note that our review procedure usually takes 2-4 weeks. Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee a specific processing time due to the substantial documentation that we need to review and the increased volume of visa applicants in these visa categories.
  • Again, your passport is not required at initial stage. If you know that you have personal or business travel, you can keep your passport and send us copy of the biometric page.
  • Your presence is not required at the pre-screening stage. You do not have to travel to Serbia until we call you for the interview.

Emailing us with status inquiries during the review stage slows the process down for all applicants. Please be patient. Additionally, please allow reasonable time for printing your visa and DHL service. Keeping the process speedy for all applicants requires that we are unable to provide boutique services for individual applicants.

Embassy Belgrade Visa Application Requirements for Fee Exempt Visas

Diplomats and Other Governmental Officials:

  • Most official and diplomatic visa applicants are not required to appear for an interview with a consular officer and are exempt from fees and fingerprint collection.
  • The Embassy only accepts Serbian diplomatic and official visa applications that have been processed through the MFA Sector for Consular Affairs Passport and Overflights Section.  Additionally, we work closely with other countries’ embassies to process their diplomatic and official visa applications – please email consbelgrade@state.gov and we can guide you through our process.
  • Official and diplomatic visa applications with required documents for official travel to the United States on behalf of the Serbian government may be dropped off and picked up by the applicant or a designated MFA courier at the Consular Section at Bulevar Kneza Aleksandra Karadordevica 92, 11040, Belgrade, Monday through Friday from 14:00 to 15:00.
  • All other arrangements for the pick-up or drop-off of applications are approved by appointment only.  Please email consbelgrade@state.gov to schedule a time.  Only those authorized by the Consular Section will be able to enter.
  • G-1, G-2, and G-3 visa applications must be accompanied by a Note Verbale from the applicant’s national government.  G-4 visa applications must be accompanied by an official request from the appropriate international organization.  Applications can be dropped off and picked up by the applicant or a designated courier from the applicant’s organization at the Consular Section at Bulevar Kneza Aleksandra Karadordevica 92, 11040, Belgrade, Monday through Friday from 1400 to 1500.
  • Processing time is normally 5-7 business days after submission of the application.  However, processing times may vary and there is no guarantee that the visa will be ready within this time frame.
  • We urge travelers to apply as early as possible and never to make firm or non-refundable travel arrangements before receiving a valid visa.
  • Holders of diplomatic or official passports traveling to the United States for tourism or other non-official purposes — as well as A-3, G-5 and – NATO-7 applicants — should email consbelgrade@state.gov for application instructions.
  • The Embassy will return visa applications that do not meet this criteria for diplomatic and official visa processing.

U.S. Government-Funded J Visas:

  • U.S. Government-funded J visa applicants are not required to schedule an interview through our scheduling service and are exempted from visa processing fees.
  • Applicants for this visa category should instead contact the Consular Section directly at consbelgrade@state.gov and include a scanned copy of their DS 2019 form.
  • The Consular Section will explain our procedures, schedule an interview, and inform applicants about necessary documents.  Interviews will take place at the Consular Section at Bulevar Kneza Aleksandra Karadordevica 92, 11040, Belgrade.
  • Processing time is normally 5-7 business days after the interview.  However, processing times may vary and there is no guarantee that the visa will be ready within this time frame.
  • Once the visa is ready, applicants will receive pick-up instructions from the Consular Section.
  • We urge travelers to apply as early as possible and never to make firm or non-refundable travel arrangements before receiving a valid visa.

Nonimmigrant Visa Fee Payment Extension

The validity of nonimmigrant MRV payments has been extended until September 30, 2023. Visa fees are non-refundable and non-transferable. If you wish to apply for a visa at another Embassy or Consulate, you will be required to pay a new MRV fee and complete a new Form DS-160.

What is a Visa?

A citizen of a foreign country who seeks to enter the United States generally must first obtain a U.S. visa, which is placed in the traveler’s passport.

Certain international travelers may be eligible to travel to the United States without a visa under the Visa Waiver Program, which is administered by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

The Visa section of this website is about U.S. visas for foreign citizens and nationals to travel to the United States. Visit Travel.State.gov for additional information.

Note: U.S. citizens do not need a U.S. visa for travel to the United States. When planning travel abroad a U.S. citizen may need a visa issued by the embassy or consulate of the country they wish to visit.

What Type of Visa Do You Need?

For short-term visits to the United States (for tourism, business, education, and more), you can go directly to the online application (form DS-160). For immigrant visas, which are issued to foreign nationals who intend to live and work permanently in the United States, you can visit the U.S. citizenship and Immigration Services site for the relevant forms.  If you are unsure what type of visa you need, please use the Visa Wizard below.
